KNOW YOUR TECH

Launched in Summer 2024 and funded by Virgin Media O2, our Know Your Tech course offers refugees an introduction to laptop refurbishment, electrical safety and database management.

Are you a refugee interested in a career in tech? Understanding the basics of computers is a good first step! This course won't make you an expert, but it will teach you the fundamentals of laptop repair, such as:

  1. Electrical Safety

    • Learn the fundamentals of safely handling electronic devices. Safety is essential when working with any hardware, and this foundational knowledge will keep you and your equipment protected.

  2. Hardware Replacement

    • Get hands-on with removing and replacing common laptop parts such as hard drives, RAM, batteries, keyboards, and screens. You'll learn how to identify components, source compatible replacements, and use the appropriate tools to make basic repairs and upgrades.

  3. Operating Systems and Software

    • Explore the basics of installing and configuring operating systems (like Windows and Linux). You'll also be introduced to common software tools used for system diagnostics, data wiping, and reinstalling essential drivers and applications.

  4. Firmware and Diagnostics

    • Understand what firmware is (e.g., BIOS/UEFI) and how it plays a role in a laptop’s functionality. You’ll also learn how to run diagnostic tests to identify hardware faults, troubleshoot common issues, and interpret error codes or indicators.

Our Know Your Tech programme currently only runs in London. Our course is designed to be accessible, so no prior level of computer knowledge is required. It’s also brilliant preparation for both working and volunteering, and it’s fun!

“The Know Your Tech course has changed the perspective of how I see life and I have learnt to appreciate myself and what I am capable of. I developed new skills about IT that I didn't know before, like being confident enough to open a laptop, identifying components, replacing parts, cleaning it etc. As well as developing a sense of security when it comes to technology, just to name those, I have learnt much more. The Know Your Tech course has been life changing for me.”
